In addition, Dr. Mulligan served two tours of duty in Baghdad, Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The first tour took place from 2003 to 2004 and saw him act as the Chief of Thoracic Surgery at the 28th Combat Support Hospital, Iraq. His second tour of duty saw a return lasting from 2006 to 2007, when he acted as the Chief of General and Thoracic Surgery with the 28th Combat Support Hospital.
Educational Background
In 1983, Dr. Mulligan graduated from the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York. He earned his bachelor’s of science degree with field of study in chemistry and civil engineering. He followed this by receiving his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, in 1989. In 1994 he completed internship and general surgery residency at Eisenhower Army Medical Center, Fort Gordon, Georgia.
From 1994 to 1997, Dr. Mulligan served as a staff general surgeon at McDonald Army Community Hospital. In 1999, he completed his fellowship in thoracic surgery at the Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia.
Additional Work and Distinctions
In addition to his military service, serving two tours in Iraq, Dr. Mulligan has written numerous articles, abstracts, presentations and posters on thoracic oncology and thoracic trauma.
