With over 20 years of experience in the medical field, Dr. Frank C. Detterbeck is the current chief and professor for the Surgical Division of Thoracic Oncology, as well as the director of the Surgical Department for the Yale University School of Medicine Cancer Center.
With a specialty in general thoracic surgery, Dr. Detterbeck has taken interest in a number of different fields including lung metastases, lung cancer, thymoma, esophageal cancer, chest wall tumors, sarcoma and mesothelioma. He also has interests rooted in chest surgery for benign conditions, as well as thoracic procedures which require minimally invasive surgery.
Dr. Detterbeck began his education at the University of Michigan in 1976, completing his undergraduate degree. He then went on to receive a Medical Degree from Northwestern University in 1983. Dr. Detterbeck’s residency was fulfilled at the Virginia mason Clinic in Seattle in General Surgery in 1988.
In 1991, he completed another residency, this time in Cardiothoracic Surgery from the University of North Carolina. In 1992, he completed a fellowship from UNC in Thoracic Transplantation. In 1990, Dr. Detterbeck was board certified in surgery and was then board certified in thoracic surgery in 1992.
In his 24 years of experience, Dr. Detterbeck has been fortunate enough to be a member of numerous prestigious organizations in the medical community. He serves in the Cardiothoracic Surgery Network, the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, as well as the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons. He also spends time as a member of the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery, the General Thoracic Surgery Club and the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association.
As Dr. Detterbeck has become more renowned in his field, he has been lucky enough to have over 100 articles published in a number of journals such as the “Journal of Thoracic Oncology” and the “Southern Medical Journal.” He also helped to edit a popular textbook focused on lung cancer, entitled “The Diagnosis and Treatment of Lung Cancer: An Evidence Based Guide for the Practicing Clinician.” He has been listed by Castle Connelly as one of America’s top doctors and has also received a number of other areas of recognition in the medical field.
