Dr. Robert B. Cameron currently serves as the Director of Thoracic Oncology in the Department of Surgery at the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA. Dr. Cameron is a cardiothoracic surgeon and surgical oncologist who is specialized in the treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma. Board certified in both general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery, Dr. Cameron attended school at both the University of Michigan and UCLA, where he received his medical degree. Following his time in school, Dr. Cameron completed three years of training at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, MD as a clinical associate in surgical oncology. He went on to complete a five year residency at UCLA, as well as a two year fellowship at Cornell and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York within the cardiothoracic surgery department. Dr. Cameron is currently a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Surgical Oncology, the Western Thoracic Surgical Association, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer. He is also a member of the Pacific Coast Surgical Association, the American Association for Cancer Research and the International Society of Biologic Therapy of Cancer. Over the years, Dr. Cameron has been fortunate enough to publish nearly 40 pieces which have received peer review status in numerous medical journals and books. He has served as an editor for two different textbooks, including one on practical oncology and one on laboratory research techniques. Before his current position as the director of thoracic oncology in the department of surgery at UCLA, Dr. Cameron joined as an assistant professor of surgery at UCLA medical center. He then went on to become the chief of general thoracic surgery at west Los Angeles veteran’s administration. Dr. Cameron’s clinical interests include hyperhidrosis, mesothelioma, minimally invasive surgery, lung transplant, esophageal, thoracic outlet syndrome, as well as trachea and thoracic cancer. He also takes part in some leadership, helping to teach and guide teams through novel therapy development aimed at extending life expectancy for mesothelioma patients. This is done as part of his membership within the Scientific Advisory Board for the Pacific Heart, Lung & Blood Institute where he takes part in research on experimental immunotherapy programs.
