Actinolite Form of Asbestos

Asbestos comes in many forms. One form of asbestos is called actinolite. This is a versatile form of asbestos that comes in many varieties. It can be thick and dense, or quite brittle. It can also appear in a variety of colors, including gray, white, green, and brown. Actinolite contains a combination of elements. Among these elements are calcium, magnesium, oxygen, silicon, iron, and hydrogen. The composition of actinolite is similar to other forms of asbestos. As it is known, asbestos is hazardous to humans, and the actinolite form of asbestos is no exception. It can lead to several fatal diseases, including lung cancer and mesothelioma.

Asbestos as an Insulator

Asbestos was a common material in the twentieth century. Many industrial nations, including the United States, used it because of its excellent insulating abilities. It was cheap to use and proved to be highly resistant to heat and cold. Health Consequences

Due to the 20 to 50 year latency period of the disease mesothelioma, the severity of the repercussions of asbestos exposure has yet to be seen. The disease, taking decades to materialize, means that many people may be unaware they have it. They don't exhibit many symptoms until the disease has already spread. Because of these reasons, the prognosis for mesothelioma is very grim. It carries one of the worst mortality rates of any form of cancer. Given the number of people who were exposed to asbestos over the years, it might be a long time before it is known how many people may have gotten mesothelioma but it is thought to be in the hundreds of thousands.

Actinolite Found in New Jersey

While there are laws that have helped eliminate asbestos, it is still present. A town in New Jersey recently found actinolite in soil that was left behind by a university. The soil contained about ten percent of actinolite asbestos, which is far above the acceptable standard. Because of this discovery, and many asbestos filled areas surely still lurking in the dark, there is still a great risk of exposure to the toxic material. Actinolite has been found in a variety of other products. Toys, drywall, and joint compounds are among the many things that contained asbestos over the years.
