Dr. Stephen C. Yang, MD is the Chief of Thoracic Surgery at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, which is a part of the Johns Hopkins Health System and an affiliate of Johns Hopkins University. He is an attending surgeon at both the Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. In addition, he is also the Director of the Thoracic Oncology program.
Education and Training
Dr. Yang graduated from Duke University with a B.A. in Chemistry, continuing on to receive his medical doctorate from the Medical College of Virginia. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center located in Houston, Texas, and finished his cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at the Medical College of Virginia. He also completed a three-year thoracic surgical oncology research fellowship at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.

Along with his medical appointments, Dr. Yang also works in academia, acting as the Surgical Curriculum and Clerkship Director for the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Associate Professor of Surgery and Oncology, as well as providing educational support as the Arthur B. and Patricia B. Modell Professor in Thoracic Surgery at the same institution. Other positions of note include the Director of Lung Transplantation within the Division of Thoracic Surgery.
Dr. Yang is currently involved in developmental, as well as clinical research over several areas of concentration. His research interests include:
Development of molecular markers for early diagnosis of lung cancer
Development of molecular markers for early diagnosis of recurrent lung cancer following surgical resection
Detection of teleomerase activity as a guide for the presence of lung cancer
Molecular biology of mesothelioma
His clinical interests, as they pertain to mesothelioma include:
Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS)/Thoracoscopy; Diagnosis and treatment of lung, mediastinal and pleural diseases
Mesothelioma: Diagnosis and surgical treatment; Neoadjuvant therapy and protocols.
