Dr. Flores attended the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, receiving his medical doctorate in 1992. Following his time at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, he spent five years at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center completing his General Surgery Internship and General Surgery Residency. He then completed a Thoracic Oncology Clinical Research Fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Dana Faber Cancer Institute/CALGB in Boston, and his Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He also received a Masters in Biostatistics from Columbia University.

Dr. Flores is Board Certified under the American Board of Surgery in Thoracic Surgery.

Research and Publications

Dr. Flores is recognized as a leader in the field of Thoracic Surgery for his revolutionary efforts in the treatment of mesothelioma. Dr. Flores has established video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) lobectomy, a minimally invasive approach using three small incisions, as the standard in the surgical treatment of lung cancer. Additionally, Dr. Flores has researched a multimodal approach to manage pleural mesothelioma, leading a number of major studies. His work in clinical trials includes neoadjuvant gemcitabine and cisplatin followed by extrapleural pneumonectomy and high dose radiation for the treatment of mesothelioma and other types of lung cancer.

The website for the Mount Sinai School of Medicine notes that Dr. Flores is in the process of publishing a large collection of data concerning VATS lobectomy. Prior to publication efforts, Dr. Flores presented this data at the 90th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery.

He was also recently highlighted in a New York Daily News feature detailing the causation, symptoms, and treatment options for mesothelioma. The article notes that Dr. Flores has been specializing in mesothelioma for the past 15 years and sees over 50 cases annually.
