Dr. Paul Sugarbaker is a mentor, investigator and has an extensive history of lecturing both nationally and internationally, earning numerous awards and citations. He is best known for his expertise and extensive training in gastrointestinal oncology, colorectal cancer surgery, and in rare diseases such as pseudomyxoma peritonei, peritoneal mesothelioma, abdominal sarcomas and peritoneal carcinomas.

Educational Background

After getting his BS in Chemistry from Wheaton College, Illinois, Dr. Sugarbaker received his MD from Cornell University Medical College in New York. Later, he got his MS in Basic Sciences from Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Following his formal training, Dr. Sugarbaker completed two residencies, one in the Surgical Residency Program at Peter Brigham Hospital in Boston and then staying at the same hospital he became the Surgical Chief Resident for his second residency. After his residencies, Dr. Sugarbaker continued his studies as a Fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston from 1973-1976.

Clinical Expertise

With a practice focus in gastrointestinal surgical oncology, Dr. Sugarbaker has pioneered specialty treatment procedures such as cytoreductive surgery with heated intrtaperitoneal chemotherapy and hyperthermia treatments using the Thermotron RF-8. Additionally, he has published more than 780 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals, several book chapters and textbooks. His textbook on sarcoma surgery has been translated into 5 languages.
