Currently serving as a cardiothoracic surgeon and professor at the Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Graeme L. Hammond is a renowned leader in many fields. One of his primary roles as a cardiothoracic surgeon is regular treatment of mesothelioma patients.
Dr. Hammond began his education with an undergraduate degree from Denison University, located in Granville, OH. He followed this up with a medical degree in Montreal, Canada at the McGill University School of Medicine. Following his time at McGill, Dr. Hammond stayed in Montreal and shadowed in surgery at the Royal Victoria Hospital. He went on to complete his residency in Boston at the Massachusetts General Hospital, then completing his clinical/research fellowship there as well.
Dr. Hammond began to teach at the Yale University School of Medicine when he was hired as an Assistant Professor. He stayed at Yale School of Medicine and moved up to become both an Associate Professor and then a Full Professor. Dr. Hammond currently serves as the attending surgeon at Yale-New Haven Hospital, as well as West Haven VA Medical Center. He has also been a contributing member of the Yale Cancer Center for over 18 years.
Some of Dr. Hammond’s primary focus is centered on thoracic surgery and the suppression of major histocompatability complex. This refers to a large section of the genomic region and family that surrounds most vertebrates. He also lists interests in lung cancer and mesothelioma, as well as other asbestos related diseases. Dr. Hammond’s certifications are approved by both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
As a member of multiple organizations, Dr. Hammond is heavily involved outside of his own hospital. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons, American Association of Thoracic Surgery, the Council on Cardiovascular Surgery, American Heart Association, and the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Dr. Hammond is also a member of the European Association for Cardio Thoracic Surgery, International Society for Heart Research and the New England Surgical Society.
With major interests in clinical research, Dr. Hammond has commanded great amounts of support in research funding in his 45 years of experience. Over the years he has been lucky enough to have numerous peer reviewed articles appear in a hundreds of different medical journals and other publications.
