Dr. David Mason is a staff surgeon in the Cleveland Clinic Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. He holds joint appointments: the Transplantation Center, Division of Surgery as well as in the Cleveland Clinic Cancer Center. Dr. Mason’s specialties include general thoracic surgery, minimally invasive thoracoscopic and laparoscopic surgery, lung cancer, esophageal cancer, malignant mesothelioma and lung transplantation. Educational Background

Dr. Mason graduated top of his class as cum laude from Harvard University and got his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York. Following his education in New York, he did his residency and internship in general surgery at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Subsequently, he advanced his training by accepting a fellowship position as Senior Research Fellow in Vascular Surgery at the University of Washington in Seattle, followed by another fellowship in Thoracic Surgery from Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Throughout his career, Dr. Mason has held a specific interest in matters regarding surgery, specifically thoracic surgeries and lung diseases. As part of his research he has been involved in several publications and journal articles regarding various aspects of his specialty. He has authored or co-authored numerous chapters in medical textbooks on his specialty interests including videothoracoscopic surgery, Barrett’s Esophagus, video-assisted thoracic surgery and gastroesophageal reflux. He has published articles in leading publications such as the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Circulation and Journal of Vascular Surgery. Distinctions and Honors

Dr. Mason was appointed as a staff surgeon in the Cleveland Clinic Heart Center Transplantion Center and Cancer Center in 2004. In 2006, he was named Teach of the Year in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. He is a member of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation and the American College of Chest Physicians.
