First Chemical Pascagoula

First Chemical Pascagoula is a chemical plant located in the Bayou Cassotte industrial park in Jackson County, Mississippi. The industrial park is neighbor to other manufacturers such as Mississippi Phosphates and Chevron. First Chemical Pascagoula began operations in 1967, making them the first chemical company incorporated in the state of Mississippi. They currently employ more than 180 people with an annual payroll of $11 million. The company was acquired by DuPont in 2002, remaining wholly subsidiary. A variety of units and operations manufactured at this plant include several specialty chemicals necessary for a broad range of products.  First Chemical Pascagoula products can be found in the following fields: pharmaceutical, auto parts, tires, dyes, photo chemicals, agricultural chemicals, and building materials.  More specifically, they are a producer of aniline and nitrotoluene intermediates and derivatives which can be found in other agricultural products. They also produce the trademarked chemicals Cerenol and Forafac.  Cerenol has a number of uses across a diverse market, while Forafac is a foam that aids in aviation, military, and industrial fires. Due to the age and start date of production at this chemical plant it is likely that it exposed former employees to asbestos. Asbestos was used to insulate machinery and plumbing throughout various plants in the United States. It saw frequent use in factories into the 1970s, when it was first regulated by the EPA. Asbestos has long been known for its resistance to heat and fire, also possessing a natural resistance to chemicals. It poses an especially significant risk when fragmented. Fragmenting allows the chemical to enter the body and cause a variety of medical conditions, one of which being mesothelioma. Mesothelioma has a long latency period; therefore, former employees may have had prolonged exposure to asbestos and only now start to exhibit first symptoms.
