Coatesville VAMC

History

The Coatesville VA Medical Center serves the more than 196,000 veterans residing in a 53-county area located in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware. This main center is the parent facility of two community-based outpatient clinics located in Springfield and Spring City, Pennsylvania. The Coatesville VAMC is part of a network totaling 10 medical centers and 44 community-based outpatient clinics which comprise VA Healthcare-VISN 4.

Services

Services provided at the Coatesville VAMC are extensive, including both inpatient and outpatient care. The facility is a strong member of the surrounding community offering social work and extended care services in addition to the services located on-site. Veterans can visit the Coatesville VAMC for everything from a routine flu shot to more intricate care such as oncology and neurology. The center also assists the community’s legally blind and visually impaired veterans and their families, offering rehabilitation, health care, and assistance with the emotional distress associated with vision loss. Education and Service Organizations

The Coatesville VAMC maintains several educational affiliations including on-site internships and work experiences for over 200 students, residents, interns, externs, and trainees. Collectively, these students represent 18 universities and medical schools with programs in nursing, LPN, nurse practitioners, podiatry, psychology, physician assistance, and social work. Every year Coatesville VAMC provides the Delaware Psychiatric Center students with MD (non-paid) residencies, which are completed during an internal medical rotation. Meeting quarterly, Coatesville VAMC has established a Veterans Advisory Council comprised of stakeholders from a number of veterans groups as a method for maintaining specific standards of excellence.

Accreditations and Achievements

The Coatesville VAMC has received numerous accreditations from a variety of pertinent organizations. These achievements include accreditation from the Joint Commission, an organization that has been acknowledged as the leader in developing quality and safety standards for health care facilities. Other accreditations have been awarded by the Office of Healthcare Inspections (or the VA Office of Inspector General), the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protections (AAHRPP), and the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC).
