Patient Resources The University of Michigan Health System has a Comprehensive Cancer Center where doctors and scientists are dedicated to discovering new forms of treatment for cancer. By using the latest surgical techniques and incorporating the newest laboratory discoveries, they are able continue the search for treatments and drugs in hopes of one day finding a cure for cancer. The Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine is committed to caring for patients diagnosed with lung diseases such as mesothelioma. Their mission is to “deliver excellent patient care, to develop new knowledge about the lungs in health and disease and to train individuals to be outstanding clinicians and researchers.” The Pulmonary Center is recognized around the world for its excellence in all of the previously stated realms. The clinical focus of the division is:

  • Shortness of breath and cough
  • Critical illness (shock, respiratory failure and multiple organ failure)
The investigative programs strive to increase the understanding of lung biology and disease while utilizing cutting edge approaches.  Their goal is to turn discoveries used into actual practices that will benefit patients. Their major areas of research include pulmonary inflammation and immunity, lung injury and repair, fibrotic lung disorders, obstructive lung diseases, cancer and antimicrobial defense mechanisms.

Awards

The University of Michigan Health System is well-known nationally and around the globe for excellence in patient care, education and research.  They earned a patient safety award for blood clot prevention, won a national Leapfrog award for being among the nation’s safest hospitals and earned a No. 14 ranking among nation’s best hospitals according the U.S. News & World Report.  Additionally, 433 physicians were named to the 2011-12 Best Doctors in America list. The hospital was also honored by the American Hospital Association for high quality care and patient safety. References:
