Dr. Francis D. Sheski is an associate professor of clinical medicine with the Department of Medicine at Indiana University. His clinical interests include interventional pulmonology for lung cancer and pleural disease, including bronchoscopic and thorascopic techniques. He is also a clinical team member of the Thoracic Oncology Program of the IU Simon Cancer Center. As a member of the Thoracic Oncology Program, Dr. Sheski has the opportunity to bring innovative care to sufferers of chest cancers, including lung, esophagus, pleura, chest wall, and mediastinum. He is a member of a team which includes professionals specializing in thoracic surgery, radiation oncology, pulmonology, medical oncology, dietetics, psychology, and nursing. Together, they help develop specialized treatment plans for each patient. With the Thoracic Oncology Program, Dr. Sheski is part of the first program of its kind in Indiana. The university describes its program as a being comprised of a “multidisciplinary team of experts” who diagnose and treat thoracic cancer in a manner that allows patients “to see a number of physicians with one visit.” This program combines clinical and laboratory expertise, recognizing that basic scientific research is an essential and unique part of their program. The campus Dr. Sheski works on maintains advanced laboratories where he is part of research that uses advanced molecular biology to understand the biology of tumors more fully and improve patient care. Educational Background Dr. Sheski earned his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin, at Madison, Wisconsin, in 1984. His initial residency took place from 1984 to 1987 at the Southeastern Family Practice, Medical College of Wisconsin in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He then went on to a fellowship in Jacksonville, Florida with the Critical Care Medicine program at the University of Florida from 1988 to 1989. Dr. Sheski then performed another residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin, from 1991 to 1994, specializing in internal medicine. From 1994 to 1997, he participated in a fellowship at Indiana University, specializing in pulmonary and critical care medicine.
