James E. Van Zandt VAMC

History

The James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center, located in Altoona, Pennsylvania, has been serving U.S. veterans since 1950. The center is the main facility acting as an umbrella for three community based outpatient clinics located in Dubois, Johnstown, and State College. Approximately 87,000 veterans reside in the 14-county area that the James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center serves. The James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center has received a number of accreditations including the Joint Commission and CAP, or College of American Pathologists. They have also instigated several innovative programs with the intent of improving clinical quality of care.

Services

The James E. Van Zandt VAMC offers a variety of services through their main location and satellite clinics. Veterans have access to outpatient services such as flu shots and physical exams to specialty care services including cardiology and women’s health. At the larger facility in Altoona there are 28 operating beds for acute care including four dedicated specifically intensive care. The James E. Van Zandt VAMC is also a source for behavioral health aimed at impacting veterans’ emotional well-being. Their behavioral health program provides consultation, evaluation, and treatment for a variety of issues. The center also maintains a level III emergency room, providing acute medical care for nearly all emergencies, which is open 24 hours a day. However, trauma patients are redirected to nearby hospitals in order to receive proper care. Veterans also have access to their prescriptions and pharmacology advice, available in person, by mail, phone, or online. Their primary care program offers a range of treatments, emphasizing preventative health care, while social services are available to offer counseling and integrative community activities and services. However, the center’s care does not stop once the veteran is back home; James E. Van Zandt VAMC also includes a long term care program, providing a community living center, home-based primary care, home telehealth, hospice, and respite care for veterans. This is not an exhaustive list of the services available, as the center works to supply veterans with comprehensive care.
