Awards and Recognition

A Magnet hospital for nursing excellence since 2005, Edward was re-designated as such in 2010. Only two percent of the nation’s hospitals have achieved Magnet re-designation, which comes from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, which is part of the American Nurses Association. Edward Hospital has also been named to the 2011 Thomas Reuters list of 50 top Cardiovascular Hospitals in the United States. It remains one of only two Illinois hospitals and one of 15 community hospitals on this list. The hospital has full accreditation from the Joint Commission and is recognized by the FDA with the Director’s Special Citation Award for exemplary sustained contributions in improving patient safety nationwide.

Edward Plainfield Cancer Center

Construction of the Edward Plainfield Cancer Center has brought cancer care closer to patients residing in the southwest suburbs of Illinois. The 30,000 square foot center features comprehensive outpatient services including chemotherapy, clinical trial enrollment, treatment support, as well as sophisticated radiation treatments such as image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) delivered by the Varian IX Linear Accelerator.

Multidisciplinary Thoracic Oncology Clinic

The Edward Cancer center opened the Multidisciplinary Thoracic Oncology Clinic, which was the first of its kind in DuPage County. The clinic boasts the ability for patients to see several cancer specialists in one setting leading to a more effective form of treatment. This is a style of care most often seen in academic hospitals, but not typically available in community hospitals such as Edward. Edward's multidisciplinary team includes experts in medical and radiation oncology, thoracic surgery and pulmonary medicine as well as a clinical trials coordinator and social work and smoking cessation counselors. The program involves the collaboration of specialty physicians who meet to develop a plan of care that is discussed with the patient on the day of his/her visit. All new patients are seen by the team within a week of referral. And, a nurse navigator coordinates every aspect of a patient's care. Reference:
